If you had to pick one, which is more important: the quantity of claims/jobs your team is working or the quality of the estimates they are producing?
This is a tricky question, especially if you are a roofing contractor. The answer is you probably want both. An increase in quantity means you are growing your business, which is great- especially in today’s economy. Of course you want quality, but if you are maintaining or growing your business that must mean the quality of work your team is putting out is good, right? Wrong.
Unless you are tracking specific metrics on claims and time spent on things such as improper documentation, missing information, follow up phone calls, etc. the inefficiency of your claim’s handling process could be costing you more than you know.
Here are a few of the warning signs:
- Claims stalling and lasting for months on end
- Longer wait time to get paid
- Increase in the number of supplements needed
- Increased time spent on a claim to follow up, get more photos, etc.
All of these warning signs mean one thing: less money going back into your business.
We often talk to contractors in this situation who feel helpless – after all, they can’t control the claim process. While it is true contractors cannot negotiate insurance claims, they can influence the outcome. And it all starts with a correctly documented and well executed initial estimate.
Ensuring accuracy in your scope and estimate from day one is the most effective way to avoid disputes and expedite claim payment. Being on the same level or greater than the carrier adjuster will make their job approving claims and payments easier.
