Asphalt Desaturation Testing & Analysis

Hail damage on a roof depends on a variety of factors including roof material age, roof assembly, slope, hail size, storm duration and more.  Spotting damage after a storm can be difficult, isn’t always straightforward and impact damage is often underestimated.

It’s not uncommon for insurance companies, roofers and engineers to all come to different conclusions on what caused the damage to a roof once a property damage claim is filed.  This causes claim delays, incorrect claim payout and costly litigation.

To help those that find themselves in this situation, we are now offering in-house desaturation (DSAT) testing for asphalt shingles, bitumen membranes, and built-up roof systems.  This test analyzes the roof material in question and can determine if a fracture is hail related or not.

How Asphalt Desaturation Testing Works

Using special equipment and chemicals, the outer asphalt component of a roof sample is removed in order to extract the internal layers for analysis.  Each layer is analyzed independently for the presence/absence of damage including bruises, punctures, tears, etc.

Due to the complex nature of this testing, roof samples must be sent to our lab in Denver, Colorado.  All collected roof samples will be tacitly examined and professionally photographed before and after the testing is complete.

This close-up of reinforcement at the area of interest shows damage that would not have been visable without a DSAT roof test.

When To Get A Desaturation Test & Analysis

In most cases, desaturation tests are used when physical evidence is needed to ensure fair insurance claim payment.  If you have questions on whether or not this type of test is right for your insurance claim, contact us today.

  • Multiple parties disagree on what caused damage to a roof system
  • Damage is visually consistent with hail but could also be caused by something else
  • To determine if hail damage is functional or cosmetic damage
  • To determine if roof damage will impact its ability to shed water

How To Get Started
