As with most states, North Carolina has a pretty strict set of rules and guidelines when it comes to getting state-issued licenses. Getting your NC contractor license is no exception. All applications that are submitted will be looked over by the North Carolina Board For General Contractors. The board has been put together by the state of North Carolina in order to keep the construction industry itself safe, but more importantly to keep the public protected.
Types of licenses (called classifications) in North Carolina
1. Limited License
- Allows you to work on/bid for projects under $500,000
- Must have a minimum working capital of $17,000
2. Intermediate License
- Allows you to work on/bid for projects up to $1,000,000
- Must have a minimum working capital of $75,000
3. Unlimited License
- The projects you can work on/bid for with this license can be an unlimited amount
- Must have a minimum working capital of $150,000
Application / Documents Needed
Every applicant must submit the following with their application:
- Financial Statement
- Tax Identification Number
- 3 letters of reference
- Application Fee (Limited = $75, Intermediate = $100, Unlimited = $125)

Sole Proprietorship – You will need to include a photocopy of a Certificate of Assumed Name with your application. You get this certificate by going to the Register of Deeds in whichever county you are planning to run your business in.
General & Limited Partnerships – Same as sole proprietors, you will need to submit a photocopied version of your Certificate of Assumed Name that you get from the Register of Deeds in whichever county you are planning to run your business in. On top of this though, you will also need to register your business with the NC Secretary of State and submit, with your application, a copy of the General Partnership Agreement or Certificate of Limited Partnership.
Domestic Corporations & LLC – As with the others above, you will need to get and submit your Certificate of Assumed Name from your County Register of Deeds. You will then need to register your business with the North Carolina Secretary of State, & turn in, with your application, a copy of the Articles of Incorporation or Articles of Organization with the official seal from the Secretary of State.
Foreign Corporations & LLC – The requirements with this business entity will be the same as above. You will need the Certificate of Assumed Name & to register with the NC Secretary of State. The only difference with the foreign Corporations & LLC’s is that, with your application, you will submit a copy of your Certificate of Authority with the official NC Secretary of State seal.
Before you submit your application, ensure you have the following completed:
- All documents completed
- Application filled out
- Application fee
Your application will be due on the first week of the month, which is when the board goes over all applications and has their meetings. It will be looked at on the first week of the following month. So, in an example, if you turned in your application on the first week of October, the board will be reviewing it and others, on the first week of November.
After submitting your application you will get sent a letter of eligibility. This is a letter that tells you to go and take the NASCLA Accredited Building exam.
Taking the exam
After receiving your letter of eligibility from the board, you will need to register to take the exam that is given by PSI Examination Services.

There will be a $70 non-refundable fee for taking the exam.
After you are finished taking the exam, you will be notified of the score that you got before even leaving. If it is a passing score, PSI will notify the board of your passing, and you will be issued your North Carolina General Contractors License.
If your score is not passing, you will be given one more attempt at taking the exam. If you don’t pass it the second time, you will be required to start the application process over again, including the fees.
